linHDD is a frontend to several functions of basic Linux drive utilities: hdparm, cfdisk, df, and mkfs. It can be used to partition and format a drive as ext2, ext3, Reiserfs, JFS, or XFS (depending upon what your kernel supports). It can also add a second drive, display free space and extended drive information, and test read speed.

Just in case you decide to add e.g. LVM support there, look at EVMS before going more complicated. :-)
